Screen printing — Prices and quantities, when is it profitable?
Screen printing has a particular cost structure. Understanding this structure allows you to decide if it is the right technique for your project.
Cost structure
Setup costs (creation of screens)
Screen printing requires the creation of a screen per color. These costs are fixed — they are better amortized as the quantity ordered is larger.
- 1 color design: setup fee × 1
- 3 color design: setup fee × 3
- 6 color design: setup fee × 6
Print unit cost
Drops significantly with volume. The cost difference between 24 and 48 units can be 40-50% per piece.
Break-even point vs. DTF
- Less than 24 units: DTF generally less expensive
- 24-48 units, simple design (1-3 colors): often competitive screen printing
- 48+ units: unbeatable screen printing for simple designs
- Complex design (6+ colors) or multicolor: DTF remains advantageous
Economic tip
Ordering the same quantity in two or three different t-shirt colors does not multiply setup costs. Screens are reused for each color of clothing.
Economic re-orders
If your screens are kept, the re-order only pays for the printing + clothing, not the setup fees. Re-orders are significantly cheaper.
